Delgado splits Wednesday doubleheader with Southwest Mississippi

Delgado split its doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi Wednesday evening at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, defeating the Bears 4-1 in game one and falling 3-1 in the second game.

In the first game, Daniel Lahare reached on a single in the first inning and scored on a double by JP LaGreco. In the fifth, Chip Bonura doubled, advanced on a single by Brandt Broussard, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Valdes to make it a 2-0 game. Justin Ory’s two-run home run in the sixth scored Matt Rykaczewski (who reached on a walk) to double the Delgado lead. Southwest Mississippi’s sole run of the game in the seventh on T Tez Cole’s homerun. Starter Jonah Manuel earned the win on the mound with Chris Turpin retiring the game’s final two batters in relief.

Southwest Mississippi opened game two with a three-run first inning, capitalizing on two hits and two Delgado errors. Delgado put a run on the board in the fourth inning in the fourth when Daniel Lahare reached on a leadoff walk, advanced on JP LaGreco’s walk, and scored on a single by Tristan Babin. Delgado left the bases loaded in the fifth, failing to overcome Southwest’s early lead en route to the 3-1 loss, Delgado’s third of the 2017 campaign. Delgado starter Hayden Adams got the loss on the mound after pitching two innings with Blayne Haro appearing five innings in relief without allowing any Southwest Mississippi runs.

Delgado and Southwest Mississippi will meet in a 1:00 doubleheader Saturday in Summit, Mississippi.
