Gus Bennett Jr. Exhibit at Delgado Community College

-Compiled from staff reports

On Thursday January 28 Delgado Community College unveiled an exhibition celebrating the life and work of local photographer Gus Bennett Jr.

Gus Bennett Jr., born and raised in New Orleans, is a prolific fine art photographer documenting the life of black New Orleanians for over 25 years. His most recent series, The New Orleans People Project, has been recognized by the lieutenant governor’s office and was featured at the New Orleans Essence Music Festival.

Bennett’s work, which has been shown all over the world, exhibits a unique process which gives way to multidimensional, soul-stirring works of art. Bennett’s work invites the viewer to consider each piece through the perspective of the nonjudgmental, equalizing view of the lens.

The Blak Code Series, which will be featured during the Black History Month Exhibition along with other works throughout the artist’s career, is one of Bennett’s newest and most prolific bodies of work. This series of work engages the viewer to consider the human form and shape through a sort of stripping away of individual identities. Each piece invites the viewer to consider beauty in a very different way while embellishing many of the pieces with a known reference of beauty–the flower. In essence, the term Blak Code itself is given new life and meaning and it is thus stripped of its negative historical connotation.

The exhibition at the Isaac Delgado Fine Arts Gallery on the Delgado Community College City Park Campus will be on view January 28 – February 25.

The Isaac Delgado Fine Arts Gallery is located at 615 City Park Avenue in New Orleans, Building 1, third floor. Gallery hours are Monday – Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The public is welcome and there is no admission charge.
