The Paris Climate Change Summit: World leaders converge in Paris

Written by: Meghan Henoumont

Today over 100 world leaders are gathered in Paris to discuss solutions to what is considered the world’s biggest problem: climate change. They will be joined by some of the planet’s leading scientists to discuss ways to scale back the emissions of greenhouse gases. According to scientists the high emissions are directly linked to the sharp rise in global temperatures and sea level rise.

The meeting is dubbed the 21st Conference of the parties (COP21) and has come at a pentacle moment in human history, The climate record for 2014 shattered global records as the hottest year in recorded history, Earth’s glaciers are melting at the fastest rates ever observed, and the world’s coral reefs are dying due to bleaching, caused by warming waters.

Scientists have released studies prior to COP21 warning that an increase of just 4 degrees Celsius will result in irreversible habitat loss for two-thirds of plant species and one-third of mammal species. According to computer warming models future generations could be faced with the evacuation of certain cities due to rising water and a heat index that may exceed 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

There is still time to act. But the window is brief and scientists urge world leaders to not wait for the future of their countries and the future of our world.
