“Straight Outta New Orleans”

By Tiffny Harris

Jason Mitchell was born in 1987 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was raised in the area known as Hollygrove. He was active in sports as a child but drifted to the world of drugs as a young adult when employment didn’t work out for him. That daily routine soon grew old when he watched many of his peers around him either die or go to jail. That inspired him to take ultimate control of his life and tap into his acting talent. He joined some acting classes that turned his unfortunate life into fame. Mitchell was cast in the movie “Straight Outta Compton” to play the West Coast legend Easy E of N.W.A. With Easy E remembered mostly for an AIDS-related death and tearing N.W.A. apart, Mitchell felt it was his call of duty to give the world a different outlook on Easy E’s life.

With the film’s casting of Mitchell, it created some controversy especially since he was picked over Easy E’s biological son. The rapper Easy E has been dead for almost 20 years but his legacy lives on through New Orleans native Jason Mitchell. Mitchell may appear in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming movie “Kong: Skull Island,” beside his Compton co-star Corey Hawkins, but it’s not yet set in stone. Jason Mitchell has already been featured in the films “Contraband” (2012), “Texas Killing Fields” (2011), and “Broken City” (2013). This is only the beginning of a bright future for Mr. Mitchell. His story can inspire us all.
