Naturally Beautiful on the Cheap

By Jamila Cherif

As a college student living on my own, I am always looking for ways to save money, especially when it comes to health and beauty. I’ve found a few ways to cut costs with some do-it-yourself remedies
First, let’s talk about hair! I recently discovered two helpful and nourishing elements: mayonnaise and avocado. Mayonnaise? Avocado? The ones you put on your sandwiches and salads? Yes, they are not only yummy, but also render your hair soft and healthy. Mix one fresh avocado with a cup of mayonnaise, massage it all over your scalp, put a shower cap on, and let it set for 20 minutes. Finally, shampoo it out with a sulfate-free product, or just a conditioner, and style your hair as desired.
Want a more radiant and bright complexion? It’s Simple. Scoop up these four very affordable treasures: eggs, henna, baking soda and cucumber.
Now make your homemade refining mask: Start by gently breaking one egg and separate the white from the yolk. Then, coat the egg yolk on your face. Be careful, avoid touching your eyes and lips! Now lie down for 15 minutes. Don’t move, or even talk! The yolk tightens your pores, acting like a face lift. Time’s up! Rinse your face with hot water and a gentle soap, and then admire the smooth result.
If you have a dark complexion, you can use henna to soften your face and give it a sparkling glow. Mix the powder with some water to make a thick paste. Then, apply it while avoiding your eyes and lips. Get comfortable, be quiet, and chill. After 15 minutes, rinse with warm water and a gentle cleanser. You can also naturally condition and color your hair with henna. (Henna mask is not recommended for light complexion!)
Are your elbows looking raggedy? Make a body scrub! Mix baking soda and water into a paste. Then massage the mixture on your face until it gets dry, and rinse. You’ll be good to go!
Cucumber helps hydrate your skin so it appears firmer. To soothe thirsty facial skin, cover your face with slices of cucumber. Then, relax. Avoid any movement and keep the slices on as long as possible.
Don’t forget one of the most important parts of your lovely face, your lips! They’ve got to be treated, too! For that, I recommend the use of honey. Grab a cotton swab, put natural honey on the tip, rub on your lips for 2 to 3 minutes, rinse it with warm water, then pat dry and admire the softness!
Girls you know your intimate areas need special attention too. Apple cider vinegar can be used as a PH balancing cleanser for your private area. Every month after your period, mix one cup of apple cider vinegar to two cups with water. Pour it in a basin and soak it for 5 to 7 minutes. What an easy way to get clean!
The last secret I want to share is a banana massage for your feet. You only need the interior skin of the peel, which you rub all over your feet. Wear socks and let it stay overnight. Shower in the morning as usual and admire your baby soft tootsies.
