It was only two weeks before the opening of “Dog Fight” when Kris LaMorte of the Delgado Theatre Department started auditions for the play he will be directing, “The Arsonists.” The play requires 12 people and auditions were open to the community at large. LaMorte said it was hard to choose, but the play will feature 12 Delgado students: Chelsea Blunt (Chorus), Tyler Brantmeyer (Biedermann),Tony Coco (Schmitz), Clark LeBeau(Chorus), Michael LeClaire (Chorus Leader), Gary Nurse (Chorus), Chinwe Onyenekwu (Mrs. Knechtling), John Para (Chorus/Policeman) Olivia Ros (Babette), Miriam Smith (Anna), Edward J. Smith( Chorus/ Dr. Philosophy),Vincent Mickens (Eisenring).  Kris LaMorte is director, and Kristy Cabibi is stage manager.

The play is about a man who invites something into his home that can potentially kill him. The play begins when arsonists are setting houses on fire in the city. It was originally a radio play called “Mr. Biedermann and the Arsonists” written by Swiss-born Max Frisch in 1953 as a response to Nazism, and was adapted to the stage in 1958.  Frisch added a Greek chorus of firefighters to the play, adding an element of farce to this dark comedy, which looks at how our complacency and denial allow the dark side of human nature to prevail. LaMorte said he feels the play is still timely. “We also invite things in our home that we think are good for us that can potentially be evil and harm us, things like genetically-modified organisms that we ingest every day, that companies won’t sell to other countries,” LaMorte said.

“The Arsonists” will premiere in Delgado Drama Hall , Room 300E of City Park Campus Building One,  Wednesday Nov. 18- Saturday Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee Nov. 23. You can look forward to a new play in the spring semester as well called “The Best of Enemies” by Mark St. Germain and directed by Michael Santos. Auditions for this play will be held in Delgado Drama Hall Monday Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
