That’s the ticket Raffle to help basketball teams

by Alycia Johnson

The Delgado men’s and women’s basketball teams will get new sweatsuits, thanks to the efforts of Enactus, a campus organization for business students. Enactus will hold a 50-50 raffle, which in the past, under marketing professor Fred Tuhro, has funded beautification projects on campus.

In the 50/50 raffle, half goes to the winner and the other half goes to the project at hand, such as the sweatsuits.   Business students will be selling tickets around campus. The process for the uniforms is in the works and should be ready by the start of the basketball season.

The raffle is usually held in November and the winner is picked on the Friday before Thanksgiving. A lucky ticket-holder can win up to $1100 and a second-place winner may be awarded if more money is left over.

Many good things have come out of the raffle for the past five to six years, such as the 100 percent green windmill. No electricity is used; it works strictly off of windpower to circulate water and release oxygen into the pond, helping to prevent algae growth. Other projects bought 150 coy for the pond, and landscaped around the pond with native plants and flowers.

Enactus is a student organization advised by Charlie Alfortish. Its mission statement is to bring people together to lead social and environmental change through entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better more sustainable world. Enactus develops leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching. The organization works with businesses and charities to promote well-being and to make a difference around campus.
