The New Orleans Pelicans’ new-and-improved roster outplayed the Miami Heat in their preseason opener at the KFC Yum Center. Jimmer Fredette led the Pelicans with 17 points, and Lane Babbitt added 15 points to beat the Heat 98-76.

The Kentucky Yum Center was filled with 20,074 fans, most looking forward to seeing four Pelican players with Kentucky ties. Rookie guard Russ Smith played for the University of Louisville, and both Anthony Davis and Darius Miller played for the University of Kentucky.

Local ties essentially made this a home game for the Pelicans, and the fans’ cheers helped them gain momentum in the second quarter. The Pelicans went on a 20-5 run to take a 44-35 lead over the Heat to finish the second quarter.

Miami Heat stars Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade had an awful shooting night. The two players combined for 5 of 20 from the field.

The Pelicans shot an outstanding 14 of 32 from beyond the arc in the game. Fredette and Babbitt each made four three-pointers.

Anthony Davis only played for five minutes of the game, but proved his worth by finishing with 5 points, 4 rebounds and three huge blocks on Chris Bosh.

Louisville college star Russ Smith played in the second half and he contributed 12 points in the Pelicans win over the Heat.
