My Next 10

By Alvaro Pena

One of the most iconic moments in NBA history has come back for discussion after 17 years. During halftime of the 1997 All-Star game in Cleveland, the NBA honored and named its “50 Greatest Players in NBA History” as a celebration to thank them for all the great memories they gave to the basketball world.

NBA TV’s Open Court panel that has retired players Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Chris Webber, Isaiah Thomas, Reggie Miller, Chauncey Billups and host Ernie Johnson made their picks Tuesday Oct. 7 for the Next 10. It was a season-opening edition of Open Court and the tenth anniversary of the release of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.

There were disagreements made about their Next 10 and questions made about the original list inductees.

Charles Barkley made it clear that Shaquille O’Neal was inducted far to early in his career. O’Neal agrees that it was too soon; he was only in his 5th season in the NBA. Legendary players like Dominique Wilkins and Bob McAdoo should have been named before O’Neal.

All their lists of the Next 10 were good, but I think some players are too new to the league to be named the “Next 10”. Here is my list.

  • Kobe Bryant
  • Tim Duncan
  • Allen Iverson
  • Dominique Wilkins
  • Bob McAdoo
  • Lebron James
  • Gary Payton
  • Dirk Nowitzki
  • Steve Nash
  • Paul Pierce
