Kendrick Lamar vs. Macklemore: Who Really Should Have Won?

By: Samira Palmer

The 2014 Grammy Awards was full of extravagant gowns, exciting performances, disappointment and controversy.  This year Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home a majority of awards associated with the hip-hop categories, including Best Rap Album.

Now anyone who is a true rap fan knows that Macklemore should have not won this category.  These guys are talented and they completed their whole album without the help of a major label.  But “Best Rap Album” really should have gone to King Kendrick.

Why? Kendrick has been raising the bar for a lot of rappers, plus he’s been trying to bring competitiveness back into the hip-hop world. “Good Kid, Maad City” is a great album and it makes you feel as if you are in the backseat of Kendrick’s minivan riding with him and his crew. It is very creative with mini segments between every other song like you are a part of his musical journey, riding through the city of Compton.

After the award show Macklemore sent Kendrick a text saying, “you got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”

Even Macklemore agrees that Kendrick should have won.

What are your opinions in this? Is the face of hip-hop getting a face-lift?
